Seniors Lunch Program
Seniors' Lunch 2024
Celebrating Father's and Mother's Day (a little late)!
Our Croatian Seniors' Pizza Party Lunch in June kicked off with a mathematics quiz, a geometry quiz, and a rapid game of Bingo. Congratulations to the winners who walked away with recipe books for anti-dementia superfoods and meals full of antioxidants and healthy vitamins for longevity and wellbeing.
Congratulations, also, to the Oldest Father, Drago Pavlic (91 years old!) - and the Oldest Mother, Thelma Levely (99-years old!), who walked away with hand-crafted doilies and plate warmers made by our Senior Member, Katica Petrunic.
A super "Thank you" to Ana Kasumovic, who set up the kitchen and prepared the food for guests (we love you Ana!), and our Volunteer helpers throughout the set up and take down, Ivan Kasumovic, Slavko and Debbie Zelic, Estika Vitez, Nigel Young-Chin, and Greg Meaker.
Thank you to Slavko Gulic and Mike Grsnik for mowing the lawn and providing our outdoor picnickers with a pleasant summer view.

SENIORS’ LUNCH #5 - November SERIES WITH Francesa Spiteri
Thursday, November 23, 2023
We had a chilly but delicious Seniors' Lunch event on November 23rd with guest speakers Francesca Spiteri and Anne Brooks from Meridian Credit Union, who spoke about financial fraud against seniors (including technological fraud schemes, romantic fraud schemes, and tax fraud schemes). Several seniors shared their experiences in thwarting criminal activities when fraudsters tried to trick them. And a special "Thank you!" to our volunteers, Slavko and Debbie Zelic, without whom the event could not have happened.

SENIORS LUNCH #3 - AUGUST SERIES WITH Councillor Wendy cheroPita
The Seniors’ Lunch (Summer Series) was be held on Tuesday, August 15th, 2023.
In Croatia, August 15th is celebrated as “Velika Gospa”, which translates to “Our Lady”. It is understood to be a celebration of Mary as a woman in the Bible with a significant leadership position in the history of Christianity.
Figuratively, “Velika Gospa” refers to the Assumption of Mary into heaven – a process by which Catholics, Orthodox and some Anglican practitioners believe God “assumed” her physical body into heaven to reunite it with her soul. All faith practitioners and non-practitioners are welcome to join us for a Senior’s Lunch at our (secular) Centre at which we will dive into a quiz about the history of women in the Bible, including the medieval “Cult of Mary” that shaped Christianity for centuries.
Special Guest Speaker
In honour of the theme of women in leadership positions, Niagara-on-the-Lake Councillor, Wendy Cheropita, joined us to discuss the programming available to seniors in the community as part of the economic development activities of the region.
A test trial of Niagara's "on demand" transit for our senior's community was discussed.
Thanks to our sponsors!

SENIORS LUNCH #2 - JUNE SERIES WITH MPP WAYNE GATES
More than 40 Members of the Centre, along with family and friends, joined us for the Seniors' Lunch (#2) with Special Guest Speaker, MPP Wayne Gates on June 28 2023 at the Croatian National Centre Niagara Peninsula. MPP Gates spoke about the criticality of long-term care home improvements in the Niagara region following the experiences and harm to seniors caused by the COVID19 global pandemic.
Thank you to our stellar volunteers - Ljubica and Josip Risek, Greg Meaker, Anja Pavela, and Suzana Petrunic - who helped to organize, coordinate and run the event. A special thank you to Durda Milkovic and Zeljko Antunovic for the baked goods they provided for the lunch.
Our sponsors at Benevento Farms, Wired Elm Consulting and Skrtich Living, who continue to make these events possible by helping to subsidize the cost of food and refreshments and by providing gift baskets for on-site fundraising.
Our Canada Day Quiz: "Who's the Best Canadian?" produced great discussions about Lester B Pearson and the launch of peacekeeping missions, the Red Dress Campaign in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), the revolutionary politics of Louis Riel at the Red River in Winnipeg and the biggest (Ontario) and smallest (Nunavut) provincial populations in the country. Congratulations to our quiz winners - they made us both proud and socially-aware as Canadians that day.
We have received positive feedback from many seniors who attended, including several non-Croatian friends of the Centre, who have already asked, "When is the next one?"
Information about our Seniors' Lunch #3 - Summer Series will be published soon. Stay tuned for more details!

The Seniors’ Lunch (June Series) will be held on Wednesday, June 28th, 2023 from 12:30 PM to 2:30PM. This month the Seniors’ Lunch will feature a special guest speaker, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Wayne Gates.
Special Guest Speaker
MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls), the Government of Ontario’s Official Opposition Critic for Long-Term Care, Retirement Homes and Home Care
Long-term care homes across Canada were the much-publicized site of severe illness and premature death for thousands of Canadians during the COVID19 global pandemic. Reform of the long-term care system across the country has become a live matter of provincial and federal debate, as a result.
MPP Gates will speak to our local constituency of seniors about long-term care policies across Ontario and the lessons learned about private and public long-term care in Ontario. MPP Gates will also be speaking about what he believes we need to do as a society to care for our seniors better and to create healthier and safer public health care for our elderly members of Canadian society.
MPP Gates will deliver a short speech followed by questions by our moderator, President and Chair, Dr. Josipa Petrunić. Attendees will be invited to pose questions from the floor in English or in Croatian, as well.
Thank you sponsors!

SENIORS’ LUNCH! WEDNESDAY, MAY 17TH (11:30 AM TO 3:30 PM)
The Centre is kicking off a Seniors’ Lunch Program. The first lunch will be held on May 17th 2023 from 11:30 AM to 3:30PM.
These lunches are simple gatherings meant to help foster socialization, intellectual and cultural engagement, and friendship-making. This program aims to support seniors’ mental and physical health. We are especially keen to engage seniors in the community who are widowed or without family nearby.
In addition to lunch, participants will be taught to play Blokus (a fascinatingly addictive game of geometry), Jenga (a humorously addictive game about architecture), and Chess (a classically addictive game of strategy), while accompanied by a mix of Croatian musical classics and pop songs from the 1950s to the 1980s.
